This is probably going to end up being extremely long and detailed. In this tutorial I’ll be using KMPlayer for screencapping(DOWNLOAD HERE) and Photoshop.
KMPlayer will allow you to auto screenshot a video. This software will open any format, so you don’t need to convert the video or something like that.
In this tutorial I’ll be teaching you how to edit your gif, add text, save it, and last but not least, making it under 500KB.
I hope you like it!
Step 1.
First of all open KMPlayer and press open and select the video you want to use for your gif. Keep in mind that if you use HQ videos your gif will look way better and this will make everything better when saving your GIF.
Step 2.
PAY ATTENTION TO THIS. It took me years to figure out how to do it.
Move the slider and click pause where you’d like your GIF to BEGIN. Then click CTRL+G on your keyboard to open the frame extraction window. Make sure your settings match with mine (My KMPlayer is in Spanish but make sure the option ”continuous is ticked” and to change the frame limit to 4 frames, and choose for the format PNG, this will make the screen capping a little bit slower, but your gif will look nicer) Now hit ”start” while the video is playing and then click close where you want your GIF to end(All the screen caps will be saved)
Make sure to save the screen caps in a place you have an easy access. You can change the destination folder where it says ”Extract all”

Step 3.
Now open Photoshop and go to go to File > Scripts > Load files into stack>Browse and select the captures you want to use. Sometimes, Photoshop doesn’t allow you to use this script.
- You can or check the tutorial on how to make GIFs out of video clips (x)
- Download the script ‘“load files into stack” (x)
- Or go to File> Scripts>load files into DICOM FILES. But there’s a problem with this because you can’t choose the screen shots you want. This will open all the files in the folder.
Okay let’s continue
This could take a long time, but it depends on how many screen shots you have
Step 4.
Go to window and click ”animation”. This should bring the animation bar. Now you will have only one frame, don’t worry! You have to click in the little button upper the right corner and hit ”make frames from layers”. You will see your captures in the animation window.

All frames should be in the animation window, but sometimes the are in the wrong order, so click in the little button again>reverse frames

Step 6. BASICS
Delete some frames by clicking on the frame, then click ”delete”. Remember if a gif has more than 15 frames, it will end up much larger than 500KB and you we don’t want that.

Now we want to change the frame delay, click the little button upper the right corner and hit ”select all frames”. Below each frame you will see a little arrow pointing down (That’s the frame time delay). Yours will probably say 0.0 seconds, then click ”other”. A window will pop up. I usually change the speed of the frame to 0,15 seconds (It depends on you, but this is the one I use) Just play around the options until you are satisfied
If this is the first time you’ve tried making GIF you have to change the looping options you will see below the first frame written once, you have to click that, and choose forever. If you don’t do that, your GIF only will move one time and you don’t want that right?

Now it’s time to crop and re size your GIF. Select the first frame and and go to Image > Image Size. A window should appear, make sure ”constrain proportions” is ticked. Be sure to scale your GIF down to 500PX wide, his will make the file size smaller. With the crop tool, crop out the parts of the GIF you don’t need.
Step 7.
IT’S TIME TO COLOR, EDIT AND ADD TEXT TO YOUR GIF.
This step is optional. If you don’t want to edit your GIF just skip this step and go to the step 7.
1.
After cropping, deleting some frames and re sizing my GIF, I usually sharpen the gif if their quality allows it, of course. This is too much work, but sharpening your gif will look way better.
I personally hate those GIFs that look over sharped. Don’t sharp the GIF is you are not using a HQ video, seriously, it looks horrible and the difference is HUGE. CLICK—-> (x).
Since there isn’t a way to sharpen all layers at once, you have to select the first frame and layer, go to filter>sharpen>sharpen. Once you have done that, you don’t have to repeat the process again. Just select the second frame and second layer and press CTRL+F in your keyboard (on a PC). Repeat this step with all your frames and layers until you are done. I usually sharpen the frames 2 or 3 times, but then I go to edit>fade sharpen.

2.
Now that my Gif is sharpened I usually color it. Keep in mind that Tumblr hates bright gifs, so don’t use a lot of brightness if you want your Gif to be under 500KB. If you want to color your gif, just go to layer>new adjustment layer and edit it to your liking. Don’t be afraid to play with the saturation, vibrance, contrast or color. It’s very important that if you are going to apply something (coloring, text, etc) you must have the first frame selected, otherwise, it won’t work. I can’t help you a lot with this, so I recommend PSDS which are easy to use. But remember that color takes more KB, so if your GIF is THAT big, use black and white coloring.
What I usually do: I duplicate the base layer multiple times and set it to screen or soft light and drag them to the top of all my gif layers.
This is all up to you, just experiment until you like how your GIF looks.
3.
Adding text to your GIF comes next. Select the horizontal type tool (make sure you have the first frame selected) and write whatever you want. At the top of the Photoshop Page, you will see a ”bar” where you can edit around with how you want your text to look. (Font,Font size, etc)

-For a water mark or a static text: You have to drag the text layer to the top of ALL your gif layers. If you want to reduce the opacity of the text, select the text layer and reduce it to 50%-60%
-If you want your text to shown up in the middle of your gif, just put the text layer above the ones you want your text to show.
If you want to add a stroke, shadows, etc. Just double click the text layer, a window will pop up, then edit it to your liking, when you are done click ok. Sometimes these effects don’t show up, so you have to make the text layer invisible by ticking the eye next to it, then make it visible again.

BEFORE SAVING, MAKE SURE ALL YOUR ADJUSTMENTS/TEXT LAYERS ARE ON THE TOP OF ALL YOUR LAYERS LIKE THIS

Step 8. FINALLY SAVING YOUR GIF
When you are done Go to file>save for web and devices a window should appear, as you can see there A LOT of options You can preview your GIF clicking in the play button at the bottom of the window. Make sure everything is okay and the speed of the GIF is acceptable. These are my settings
(FULL SIZE)

As you can see my GIF is 404KB. That’s below 500KB. Saving can be difficult and it isn’t funny. Don’t play a lot with the number of colors because this will lower the quality of your gif. If your GIF is too big, make it black and white, you can lower the colors and it will still look nice. I made a very detailed tutorial on how to make your GIF under 500KB. Check it out here: TIPS AND TRICKS FOR HQ GIFS AND UNDER 500KB CLICK—> (X)
I found this little useful thing. This might not work and you have to follow the steps above. You can try it anyway. Click in the little button in the upper the right corner of the window, and then hit optimize to file size.
A window should pop up and set the file size to 495K.
As I said before. This doesn’t work all the time. This could lower the quality of your GIF a lot. So check out the tutorial I have on how to make HQ GIFs and under 500KB

Set it to 495KB.

I’m done with my GIF
Then click save>images only
All done :)

If you found the tutorial helpful a simple like will be great feedback for me :)
